The Paddle Program at Northmoor CC, led by Co-Paddle Directors Mark Johnson and Dave Ohlmuller, started five years ago. The “grand opening” sported two courts, a renovated skeet shooting shack as a paddle hut, and an exhibition match in front of a modest group of members featuring four pros. The hope at the time was to spark interest in the sport that encourages such fun to be had outdoors on the beautiful Northmoor grounds during our long cold Chicago winters. Oh my, how things have changed!
Northmoor’s paddle program has become one of the best on the North Shore, with opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels to play, learn and compete. In 2011, to accommodate member interest, Northmoor added two more courts and expanded parking. We have four ladies’ teams and seven men’s teams, drilling and playing from September through March. More than one hundred thirty members participate in a wide range of leagues, social events, private and group lessons and open court play. Northmoor also participates as a tournament site for local and national competitions.
In March, 2014, Northmoor’s program continues its expansion, with construction of a new state-of-the-art paddle hut -- double in size -- complete with a fieldstone fireplace, wet bar, big screen TVs, storage cubbies, and big comfy couches for lounging and socializing after a competitive or social match. Construction is scheduled for completion by the the first week of September.
